Grading Information:
Please be aware that all players turning 10 years and older in 2025 must attend grading. This is to ensure we can place them in a team with similarly skilled players.
Grading & team selection:To ensure players are participating in a competition that is both challenging and enjoyable, they are assessed by Sandgate Hawk’s grading officers according to the clubs Grading Policy to determine the appropriate division level. Individual players will be assessed on their demonstrated skill level to determine the appropriate team and its division. The grading committee may invite selected players (U12 – U14) to grade in higher divisions. In these instances, the relevant players and their families will be notified in advance.
We can't promise that any player aged 10+ will be allocated to the same team as their friend/s. This is dependent on the results of grading. The Grading Committee is focused on placing similarly skilled players in teams together. This allows each player an equal opportunity for court time, positional rotation and the opportunity to build new friendships each year.
Will my player be in the same team as last year?It is expected that players develop and improve each season. Some players may improve more than others and we expect to see changes in most, if not all, teams. The club has also seen significant growth over the past few years, with new players joining that need to be placed in teams at all levels.
What happens at grading?A grading day is where players play a series of netball games against other players, in positions nominated in their registration via Netball Connect. The Grading Committee may play players in other positions that either the Grading Committee believes is a better position for the player or due to need (e.g. lack of players nominating for a particular position).
These games are officiated by SGH umpires, and the Grading Committee will observe the players skills, ability, effort and potential. The Grading Committee will score the players against a number of criteria set out by Netball Australia and also take notes. The Grading Committee will then form teams of 8-9 players, ensuring there's a balance of positions (e.g. mids, shooters & defenders).
We understand this can be a stressful time, especially for our U10s and new players. Please don't stress, we have a lot of Committee members helping on the day. They will keep an eye on everyone, make sure they're OK and offer assistance where needed.
However, if you are concerned that your child may need a little extra support - please let us know.
